Yemen has become a focal point of the war on terrorism. From the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000 to the underwear bombs of 2009 and 2012, with smaller plots in between, policymakers are deeply concerned about the challenges and complexities Yemen presents. The American Security Project compiled this fact sheet to lay out some basic facts about the country so we can better understand why things happen there.

Joshua Foust, the author of the fact sheet, said:

“Though Yemen is talked about often, basic facts about the country routinely go unmentioned in the public debate about what policymakers should do to combat the terrorist threat. The complexity of Yemen’s history and politics make that discussion extremely difficult without better data.”
