According to the Egyptian election commission, polls will remain open for an extra day in a final push to encourage the 58 million eligible voters to practice their constitutional right. This comes after two days of low voter turnout, which some say is a result of a combination of a heat-wave, security concerns, and general voter apathy. Security is a top priority for the election commission, and the past two voting days have gone off without any serious problems. Efforts to encourage voters to head to the polls are extensive and illustrates the transitional government’s efforts to promote the democratic process and to ensure a clear and decisive victor.
Former army chief Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is running against the left-wing candidate Hamdeen Sabahi, a former legislator who came in third in the 2012 election. Initial election results should be released by the end of the day (Wednesday, May 28th 2014).
