National Security and the Election

The American Security Project releases a series of videos in which our staff discuss key national security issues facing the country during the election period.

Leading up to the election in November, many important issues will be discussed and argued over. We believe that the following topics must be part of the election debate.  But they should not fall victim to simplistic partisan politics.

Enhancing our national security is not a left or right issue. The below issues do not belong to any one party. In reality, we know that to truly support and increase our security, we need long term approaches and new strategies to the threats and opportunities we face.

The American Security Project provides fact-based analysis in order to create sustainable change – in so doing  – is creating consensus to enhance our national security.

Introduction: BGen Stephen A. Cheney USMC (Ret.) introduces the series.

Energy and Climate Security:

ASP Senior Fellow Andrew Holland sat down for a discussion on the pressing energy issues that are up for debate in this November’s Presidential election. He offers his thoughts on a range of important subjects that are critical to America’s national security – the polarized energy debate, gas prices, what to do with the natural gas bounty, long-term energy planning, and the pros and cons of the two candidates energy policies.

Nuclear Security:

Terri Lodge, ASP’s nuclear security director, discusses her thoughts on some of the biggest questions surrounding the future of US nuclear security.  Among other things, she declared that nuclear security should not become too politicized. Cold, hard facts should rule policy making, and nuclear security, above all else, should be non-partisan.

Public Diplomacy and Strategic Communications:

ASP’s Senior Policy Analyst Matthew Wallin discuss the status of American public diplomacy and the direction it may take after the presidential election. This includes an analysis of President Obama’s efforts so far, and a look at what Governor Romney may pursue.

Asymmetric Operations:

ASP Fellow Joshua Foust sat down to discuss pressing security issues that are relevant to the election this November. He offers his thoughts on a range of important subjects that are critical to America’s national security – the war in Afghanistan, the rise of drone warfare, the European debt crisis, NATO, and Yemen.
