National Defense covered Representative’s Adam Smith’s remarks at the American Security Project.  Representative Smith was at ASP to discuss the growing importance of Africa in US interests and AFRICOM’s role in the continent.   He stressed that the US military is needed in Africa to create an environment that supports development, not to fight wars, and that AFRICOM’s efforts should be based on partnerships with host national forces.

Africa should be a “model for how we need to engage in foreign policy and national security broadly,” Smith said.
